Let's look into Hebrews 11 and see what faith enables us to DO: Obtain a good testimony (v2); Understand the power of God's word (v3); Offer to God acceptable worship (v4); Overcome the power of death (v5); Please God (v6); Prepare for the next move of God (v7); Obey God's call even when you don't know where He's leading (v8); Dwell in the promises of God (v9); Receive strength to conceive what God has put inside you (v11); Give sacrificially (v17); Bless others (v20); Gain insight into the future and prepare (v22); Take a stand against evil in society (v23); Keep your identity (v25); Live for Christ rather than enjoy sin (v26, 27); Establish a good inheritance/tradition for future generations (v28); Pass through situations ('Your Red Sea') that would destroy those outside Christ (v29); Overcome every obstacle that separates you from God's best (v30); Escape God's judgement by doing good (v31); Work righteousness, obtain promises, stop the mouths of lions (v33); Quench the violence of fire, escape the edge of the sword (gun in today's world), become strong out of our weakness, be brave in the midst of life's battles, cause our enemy to flee (v34); Raise the dead (situations and even people too), endure fiery trials and circumstances (v37, 38). As you can see, faith enables us to DO many things. Faith must be expressed by action, i.e. 'works'. That's why James 2:26 says "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." It's not enough to believe in our mind what the Bible says, we must with God's help obey. For example we could believe that God will supply all our needs, but what if the Lord says to us "Give some money to that needy person"? Will you act on your belief and obey, or will you say "I can't do that Lord, I need the money for something else"? We may ask ourselves "How can I get enough faith to do all that the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 did?" Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). There are many people to be won for Christ, many who need to be encouraged, many to be strengthened, and visited, and helped, and fed, and clothed, and loved. There is a devil to trample and a God to glorify! As we move forward in the things the Lord set down for us (Ephesians 2:10), we have the promise of Christ "I will never leave you nor forsake you." |
